‘They never asked us’: Two TV icons would have ‘loved to return’ to Coronation Street for legend’s funeral

Acting legend Sally Lindsay has opened up about her time in Coronation Street, revealing that she would’ve loved to return to the soap alongside her friend Suranne Jones – but was never asked.

Sally played Shelley Unwin from 2001-2006 and is still best friends with co-star Suranne, who portrayed Karen MacDonald.

The actress recently reflected on her time on the show and confirmed in a chat that she really wanted to return for the funeral of Betty Williams (Betty Driver) in 2001, but never got the call.

‘I loved every minute!’, she told Prima Magazine.

‘Suranne and Jennifer James [Geena Gregory] are still my best friends – we just had a weekend away in Norfolk together. I definitely would’ve gone back to Corrie for Betty’s funeral because she was a very dear friend.

‘Suranne said she would have done as well, but they never asked us.’

Back in 2022, Sally shared her thoughts on those who believe landing a role in the ITV soap ‘think it’s all about being famous.’

‘A lot of people, when they join Coronation Street, think it’s all about being famous and… going to awards and that’s it, you’re made. And you’re not. You’re really not’, she told Kate Thornton, host of the White Wine Question Time podcast.

She continued: ‘You know, you’ve got someone like Bradley Walsh, who does everything and people say “oh that’s amazing”, but if you do it, they’re like, “aren’t you an actor though?”. Yeah, yeah, I am, I’m a really good one, but I can do that as well.’

Sally’s exit storyline in Coronation Street saw her character offered a new job in the Peak District.

Her best friend Suranne Jones has gone on to appear in a variety of hugely successful TV dramas.

Most recently, Suranne returned to the BBC One show Vigil, where she plays DCI Amy Silva.

The storyline focused on drone warfare after a weapons test in Scotland turned deadly.

The series sees Amy to fly out to the Middle East as she tries get to the truth, while ignoring the politics between those involved.
