ITV Coronation Street Star THROWS SHADE After Awards Snub: “Who Needs a BAFTA Anyway?

Coronation Street actor Antony Cotton has spoken out after the long-running soap failed to secure a nomination in last night’s BAFTA television awards.

The best soap category was a three horse race between ITV’s Emmerdale and the BBC’s EastEnders and Casualty, with the latter being crowned the much-deserved winner.

Antony, 48, has played Sean Tully on the cobbles since 2003 and has recently been embroiled in a huge storyline following his on-screen son Dylan Wilson (Liam McCheyne) being charged with knife crime.

Last night (12th May), he expressed support for the other continuing dramas that were nominated.

On the red carpet, he told Digital Spy: ‘I feel like I’m excited to see how our friends over in Yorkshire and the East End do. I’ve been coming to these for years – I think it was 25 years ago I came to my first BAFTAs

‘So we’ve had our fair share. We’ve got enough silverware in the cabinet, so it’s nice to let somebody else have it for once.’

He continued: ‘It’s just a nice thing to be able to catch up with people. I’ve seen one of our directors, Matt Hilton, who also creates Emmerdale

‘So we’re all part of an extended family and I’ve got friends that are here that I’ve known for donkeys’ years.’

Despite not picking up best soap this year, it has won seven times in the past and during its almost 64 year history, Coronation Street has picked up a wealth of accolades which are proudly displayed at their studios in Trafford, Greater Manchester.

Last month, John Whiston, managing director of continuing dramas and head of ITV in the North released a statement following backlash surrounding darker storylines.

‘Coronation Street is, and always has been, a mixture of characters you love, earthy humour and stories that matter such as the current Liam bullying storyline or the Lauren grooming storyline’ he began.

‘The show is proud to explore important contemporary issues such as these and our audience research shows that viewers really appreciate these stories and believe we deal with them in an engaging but responsible way.

‘Which is why Coronation Street continues to be the most-watched soap on British TV.’
