EastEnders has given fans an update on Ben Mitchell months after he was imprisoned for fraud in America.

Kathy Beale, played by Gillian Taylforth, is set to return to Albert Square next week after leaving to visit her son in the States. Earlier this year, Ben’s family were left shocked when he was arrested and sentenced to jail time after admitting to fraud.

The crime occurred when Ben travelled to the US to explore specialist treatment options for Lola Pearce’s brain tumour.

While there, he ran out of money and resorted to stealing a credit card to fund his trip. Tragically, Lola passed away before he could return home.

Upon Kathy’s return, she quickly informs Phil Mitchell, played by Steve McFadden, that their son Ben isn’t doing well and that Ian Beale, played by Adam Woodyatt, is staying to try and secure him a better lawyer, reports the Daily Star.

In desperation, she pleads with Phil to focus all his efforts on helping with Ben’s appeal. But will he put his son first? However, Phil is somewhat preoccupied with his own issues due to Reiss Colwell, played by Jonny Freeman.

After falling for a scam investment opportunity, Phil has been trying to reclaim his money from the fraudulent accountant though Reiss doesn’t have it. As viewers know, Reiss used Phil’s money to settle his debts, after falling behind on payments for his late wife Debbie’s care.

With Phil’s deadline fast approaching, Reiss finds himself unable to make the payment. In a dramatic turn of events, Phil confronts Reiss once again in a fit of anger, leaving Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) and Teddy Mitchell (Roland Manookian) to defuse the tense situation.

The question remains: will Phil receive his money? And more crucially, can he assist his son?

EastEnders airs Monday to Thursday at 7.30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
