Acting legend Sally Lindsay has opened up about her time in Coronation Street, revealing that she would’ve loved to return to the soap alongside her friend and former co-star Suranne Jones – but was never asked.

Sally played Shelley Unwin from 2001-2006 and is still best friends with co-star Suranne, who portrayed Karen MacDonald between 2000 and 2004.

The actress recently reflected on her time on the show and confirmed that she really wanted to return for the funeral of Betty Williams (Betty Driver) in 2012, but never got the call.

‘I definitely would have gone back to Corrie for Betty’s funeral because she was a very dear friend,’ Sally told Yours Magazine.

‘Suranne said she would have done as well, but they never asked us.’

However, when asked if she would return now, Sally gave a slightly different answer.

‘It was a wonderful time. Suranne and I get asked that a lot, and obviously we’ve been very lucky in our careers, so at the moment, no.

‘Although, having said that, never say never, because we loved it – I loved it. It’s the best place to grow, and to learn. I learnt everything on Coronation Street – it’s brilliant.’

Sally’s exit storyline in Coronation Street saw her character Shelley offered a new job in the Peak District, while Suranne’s character Karen walked out on husband Steve McDonald (Simon Gregson) in 2004.

Since leaving the ITV soap, Sally has gone on to have starring roles in Mount Pleasant, Cold Call and The Madame Blanc Mysteries.

Her best friend Suranne Jones has also gone on to appear in a variety of hugely successful TV dramas, including hit BBC One series Vigil, which returned to our screens in late 2023 for a second series.

Both Sally and Suranne also starred together in the hit series Scott and Bailey.

The pair remain close friends, and recently went on a ‘gals trip’ with fellow Corrie legend Geena Gregory star Jennifer Boardman, which Suranne documented in an Instagram post that was well received by fans.
