Fan favourite Patsy Palmer is all set to return as Bianca Jackson on EastEnders. Her character Bianca became a household name in the ’90s, and Patsy was everyone’s favourite. We know that show business can be a pressure cooker for young talents. The young actors feel overwhelmed when stardom hits. They are pressured to act mature at a young age. Moreover, they become susceptible to peer pressure.
Patsy has recently opened up about her experience on the show and reflected on her early years. In addition, she has described her time on the BBC soap as the “hardest” gig. Read on as we share Patsy’s experience in her own words.
EastEnders: Patsy’s Journey on EastEnders
Patsy will reprise her iconic character of Bianca Jackson soon. She made a guest appearance in 2019, marking her most recent stint. Much to our delight, Bianca will return to EastEnders in the spring for another brief appearance. The EastEnders spoilers reveal that her comeback will tie in with Whitney’s exit story. Whitney Dean and Zack Hudon will visit her in Milton Keynes. Patsy is thrilled to make a comeback as she has cherished many wonderful years on the BBC One soap.
The actress shared insights into her time in the Square on How to Own the Room podcast by Viv Groskop. Patsy believes that working on EastEnders was the most challenging job of her career. She said, “I must admit, when I see people in EastEnders, when I go back to work, it is like putting on an old pair of slippers.” The people on the soap are like family, and she spent more time with them than her actual family back then.
Furthermore, in retrospect, Palmer expressed that everything seemed much bigger when she debuted in 1993. She emphasised, “I was very young, and we were thrown into the height of fame.” And that she didn’t realise 22 million people were watching them. The former EE star went on to express her low moments amidst all the madness in the 1990s. The actress recalled, “It would hit you, and you would feel so overwhelmed, and the anxiety would kick in.” There’s more to it! The actress continued to recount her glamorous journey, punctuated with challenges and low moments.
Navigating Both Glitz and Challenges
Additionally, Palmer elaborated on her anxiety, saying, “If you suffer from anxiety attacks, you don’t know what is happening.” In her case, it was very environmental and depended on her surroundings and the events in her life. The 51-year-old actress said that the allure of glamour and awards often deceives people. However, she said, “It is the hardest work I have ever had at EastEnders.”
Lastly, Palmer then weighed in on why life as a performer. According to her, this life is not for the faint-hearted, and sustaining the life of a performer requires big breaks. Moreover, artists can suffer from anxiety and depression due to the extreme level of responsibility. At last, Patsy commended EastEnders and called it “enormous” for her. She concluded by saying, “I was thrust into this character in a soap opera. So, yeah, who would be able to cope with that?”
